Calvin Alumni in Holland’s History

with Robert Swierenga '57

We invite you to a luncheon featuring Calvin Distinguished Alumnus Bob Swierenga ’57 of the A.C. Van Raalte Institute at Hope College. Bob will share excerpts about Calvin alumni from his new book, Holland, Michigan: From Dutch Colony to Dynamic City. Swierenga’s book, published just this year, is the first comprehensive history of the city, chronicling life since 1847 when the initial band of Dutch settlers founded the community.

Calvin is leading the way among Michigan colleges and universities by implementing a new undergraduate major in public health this fall. Join the Lakeshore alumni network for lunch and get the inside scoop from economics professor Scott Vander Linde. He will talk about the importance of this discipline locally and globally and how it relates to relieving financial stress within the United States health care system. After his talk, he will provide a time of Q & A.

We had a luncheon at the historic Jubilee Ministries Midtown Center which is the former Holland High School. Craig Spoelhof ’90, Jubilee Ministries board of directors, welcomed us and shared the mission of this non-profit focused on neighborhood revitalization in core-city Holland. Dr. Byker also was on-hand to talk to us.

Here, at the Ottawa County Parks Nature Education Center at Hemlock Crossing we learned first-hand about the work that the center is doing. and heard from Calvin professor and Ecosystem Preserve director Randy Van Dragt. We also went on a nature walk and had a kids’ craft and snacks.
