Informal hors d’oeuvre and beverage reception will be available in the Walker Gallery at 6:30 p.m., followed by a presentation at 7:30 p.m. in the museum’s auditorium. This presentation will feature Joel Zwart, the college’s director of exhibitions, and professor of art history Henry Luttikhuizen.

Last September, we toured the newly renovated Holland Hospital and saw how a sophisticated medical facility could enhance patient care. Next, we will have the opportunity to experience one of the outstanding permanent art collections in West Michigan at the Muskegon Museum of Art. This nearly 100-year-old institution began amassing its wealth of artworks in 1905 through the generosity of lumber baron and philanthropist Charles H. Hackley. When he died in that year, Hackley left a bequest whose stated purpose was to purchase “pictures of the best kind.”

Lakeshore alumni and friends will have the opportunity to experience works by John Steuart Curry, J.A.M. Whistler, Camille Pissarro, Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Auguste Rodin, Alfred Sisley, Pierre Bonnard, William Merritt Chase and Lucas Cranach. Curry’s Tornado Over Kansas, Hopper’s New York Restaurant and Cranach’s portraits of Martin Luther and his wife Katharina are highlights of the collection.

Calvin staff and faculty will be on hand to lend their expertise to the event. Joel Zwart, the college’s director of exhibitions, will speak about Calvin’s long relationship with the Muskegon Museum of Art, and professor of art history Henry Luttikhuizen will give a brief overview of the permanent collection. Following this half-hour presentation, Lakeshore alumni and friends are free to explore the galleries, which house not only paintings, but also fine print and glass collections — the latter of which includes work by Dale Chihuly.

Alumni and their guests are also welcome to visit the Walker Gallery for “Turn In,” the 80th-annual exhibition of Michigan artists, the longest-running art show in the state.

The $15 admission price includes museum entry and an informal hors d’oeuvre and beverage reception.
