Coming home to Calvin

Here are just a few highlights for Homecoming & Family Weekend 2011 that's coming up October 21 & 22, 2011. Register and get tickets now »

The 10-Year, 25-Year, 40-Year and 45-Year class reunions will celebrate, along with alumni from business and economics. There is a new Family Weekend Tailgate dinner on Friday night for all, many sporting events to choose from, and you will be able to watch practice for the basketball teams. If you have wanted to try the climbing wall, here's your chance, or take a tour of campus or town.

Also scheduled are improv performances, activities for siblings, the annual Cardboard Canoe Race, the Calvin Music Festival, a pancake breakfast fundraiser for music ensembles, art gallery exhibits and tours, Ecosystem Preserve activities and much more.See all the weekend activity information here.

Excellence in sports

There are a lot of exciting headlines in Calvin sports, with volleyball coach Amber Warners picking up her 300th win. Other highlights include:

 Calvin has joined the MIAA in adding men's and women's varsity lacrosse beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year.

Jed Christiansen '10 qualifies for U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials at the Chicago Marathon.

Last week the Calvin community disposed of the objects that ensnare them. Confession Week is possible at Calvin because of the courage students and faculty have to admit their mistakes and go forth into new life, according to Chaplain Hulst.

Student senate launches semester bike loans with a much larger turnout than expected.

Unlearn Week, Calvin’s annual week of lectures and activities centered on anti-racism, is already underway. The series features lectures, discussion, films and other events aimed at kicking off a yearlong conversation about race and justice.

Lecture, art notes

A yearlong Global Hunger and Food Security lecture series highlights the critical importance of preserving farmland and water resources around the globe. The series is a collaboration between Calvin’s geology, geography and environmental studies department, international development program and the Calvin Faith and Science Seminar series. Half of the speakers will be from Calvin, and half will be from outside the college. All of the talks are free and open to the public.

An ArtPrize entry at Calvin College's (106) Gallery and Studio has been honored with the Sustainability Award, one of a handful of juried awards given out by organizers of the international art competition. 

Also please note the call for entries for the Alumni Painting Exhibition deadline is December 1, 2011.
