Danial GarciaThe Gift of All: A Community of Givers

A new documentary film by communications arts and sciences professor Daniel Garcia gets beyond the names on countless Grand Rapids buildings to the people who gave not only their money, but also their time and their vision to the community.   These local philanthropists are inspiring a new generation of givers.

Alumni work in Guatemala

Alumni Rob ex '90 and Tara Cahill '85 stopped in at Calvin recently to talk with students about their development work in the Q’equchi’ Maya communities.  These places are so remote that they have to hike through the forest to reach them.  While on campus the week of October 17, the Cahills lectured to students studying history, botany, gender studies, and, of course, international development.  See the photo gallery and read more about their work where farm meets forest.

The women’s cross country team will head into the November 15 NCAA III Great Lakes Regional meet as the nation’s number-one ranked team. The Knights are once again ranked number-one in the latest Division III Top-25 poll released by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Christmas at the Campus Store star

Calvin Around Town event and Christmas at the Campus Store

The Grand Rapids Chapter of the Calvin Alumni Association is pleased to present "Around Town" events, providing Calvin alumni and friends with an inside look at famous city settings.  The next installment features an evening at the newly renovated Burton Elementary-Middle School on Tuesday, November 18, 2008.  This 188,000 sq. ft. facility—which blends the architectural style of the original 1926 structure with contemporary, hi-tech classrooms, clinics and other features—has been re-envisioned to meet the needs of the surrounding community, which includes housing medical and dental clinics, counseling offices, a media center and an up-to-date gymnasium and cafeteria. Calvin alumni and their friends will have full access to the facility on this evening and will hear from special speakers while enjoying an hors d'oeuvre reception.

You should also make plans to visit campus on December 6 for the 2008 Christmas at the Campus Store sale.  Hosted by the Grand Rapids Chapter of the Calvin Alumni Association, this sale features discounts, festive shopping and refreshments, book-signings and free gift-wrapping!  Proceeds from each purchase fund scholarships for local Calvin-bound high school seniors who demonstrate outstanding Christian character and service. Since 1991, the chapter has funded over 145 scholarships with nearly $225,000 from local alumni.  If you are unable to attend the sale, you can always shop for Calvin goods online. Check out the campus store's enhanced site featuring many new items and great gift ideas---a John Calvin bobble head doll, anyone? On-line ordering is quick, easy and always open! Enjoy free shipping through November 15th on orders over $60

Exhibitions focus on sprawl

From November 14 to December 20, the Center Art Gallery is pleased to present "A Field Guide to Sprawl - text by Dolores Hayden, Photographs by Jim Wark." Based on Hayden’s book, the exhibition chronicles built forms that are a part of the American landscape, and forces viewers to understand and confront sprawl. In conjunction with this exhibition, the Calvin College Department of Art and Art History presents an exhibition of new development plans at the (106) South Division Gallery entitled "Beyond Sprawl -- New Development in Grand Rapids." The exhibition runs from November 7 to 26 and features many examples of urban redevelopment, as well as greenfield and infill development projects that seek to reconnect community and move beyond sprawl.  Many events are being planned in conjunction with these exhibits, including a presentation and discussion on November 18 and a panel discussion on November 25.
