In addition to generally available scholarships, Spanish students at Calvin are eligible for additional awards and scholarships available only to students within the Spanish major.

How to apply for scholarships

The application forms for named scholarships are available every year beginning January 1. Incoming students have a deadline date of February 1.  Current students have a deadline date of March 1.  Many of the scholarships for current students are available online through the Portal (Services>Scholarships and Financial Aid>Upperclass Named Scholarship Application).  All current students who will be enrolled next academic year are encouraged to apply.

Note: The deadline for the Elsa Cortina Scholarship is the same as the deadline for the Spring Semester in Spain application.

Elsa Cortina Scholarship

Faculty, friends and alumni of the Spanish Department established this scholarship to honor Dr. Elsa Cortina who taught in the Spanish Department for over 30 years. Through Dr. Cortina's leadership and vision, Calvin's first ever semester abroad program was established in 1983 in Denia, Spain. The Elsa Cortina Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student accepted to the semester in Spain program.

Edna Greenway Scholarship

Dr. Edna Greenway has taught students from elementary school through seminary to speak and love the Spanish language. The Spanish Department has honored her with an endowed scholarship so that future generations of students will benefit from her Reformed Christian perspective on teaching and learning, even after she has retired. This scholarship encourages students to reflect on and articulate the importance of the integration of faith in their own lives and careers.

Alan and Jan Pauw Family Scholarship

Mr. Alan and Mrs. Jan Pauw established this scholarship in appreciation of the education three generations of family members have received at Calvin. They have a special interest in liberal arts education and believe that education of this type available at Calvin is equal to that at the best colleges and universities. Alan Pauw is a lawyer and CPA and has a doctors degree in history. Jan Pauw is a professor of linguistics and holds a Ph.D. in Indo-European Studies.

The Elsa Cortina Award

The Elsa Cortina Award is given each year to the graduating senior with the highest GPA. The student who earns this award has their name inscribed on a plaque in the Spanish department, and receives a gift from the Spanish department.
