AJV Medical Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Derek and Jennifer VerMeulen for a Calvin student who is interested in a medical career. It honors the donor's sister who spent many months in a halo as a result of a jet ski accident. Through hard rehab and God's grace, the young woman has fully recovered from this accident and is enrolled in pre-med classes. Jennifer graduated from Calvin and is a nurse who observes those who, on a daily basis, overcome adversity. Adversity comes in many shapes and sizes and could be a struggle with depression, a family split, or any number of things. The VerMeulens wish to help those who have persevered through adversity and then through this perseverance, wish to help others upon graduation.

Ann, Myrtle, Eunice, Faith and Marie Huizenga Scholarship for Women

This scholarship was established by Philip L. Huizenga in honor and recognition of his sisters, Ann Huizenga, Myrtle Wells, Eunice Odom, Faith Hondorp, and his wife, Marie Houtman Huizenga, for the love, care and guidance they provided to him while he was growing up and during his marriage to Marie. Dr. and Mrs. Lee S. Huizenga were Christian Reformed Church medical missionaries to China from October 20, 1920, to the end of World War II in 1945. Philip became part of their family as an infant in June of 1938 when he was "rescued" from a Shanghai orphanage by Myrtle who worked there as a nurse. The Huizenga household was very busy but in spite of their schedules and the hardships inherent with being a medical missionary family in a foreign land, they made time to take into their lives a newborn. This scholarship is intended to assist women students pursuing careers in the fields of medicine and social work with an interest in missions or service work.

Blake, Elise and Macy Morren Memorial Scholarship

In May of 1996, Bill and Sue Morren were blessed with twins, a boy and a girl, Blake David and Elise Katherine. At the age of seven months they were both diagnosed with a fatal, genetically inherited neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), also known as Werdnig-Hoffman Disease. Both happy and bright children, Blake and Elise were familiar with doctors, nurses and long hospital stays because of their weakened respiratory systems. They died before they turned two. Bill and Sue's third child, Macy Christine, was also born with SMA and joined Blake and Elise in heaven in February 2001 at the age of 21 months. In their contact with literally hundreds of pediatric medical staff, Bill and Sue have been touched not only by the skill and patience of their childrens' pediatric nurses, but also by the compassion these nurses showed and the Christ-like way in which they cared for their children. It is the Morrens' hope that they can in some small way help enable Calvin students with a desire to enter the nursing field to accomplish their goals.

John and Geraldine Fongers Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2005 by John Fongers and his wife Penelope to honor their mother, Geraldine Fongers, for all the love and devotion she has given them and all her family throughout the years. Geraldine Fongers was blessed with the gift of hospitality. Many residents of the west side of Grand Rapids, where Geri lived for most of her life, remember her friendly voice welcoming them to church, school, a restaurant or even walking down the street with her trade mark greeting of "hey kid". She and her husband Bud were faithful members of the church and placed a high value on education. They sent their four children to Christian schools and while all received degrees of higher education, three of the four children graduated from Calvin. John, the eldest son of Geraldine, received his BS in Biology from Calvin and went on to receive his BS in Nursing and his advanced nurse practitioner degree in anesthesia. John fondly remembers Geri encouraging him to work as an orderly at Butterworth hospital while attending Calvin. This is where John discovered the love for medicine. In 2011, John passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. To honor the memory of both Geri and John, Penelope would like to devote these funds to assist male nursing students with the cost of their education. A good "bedside manner" and the gift of hospitality are very important to the healing process. A student with qualities like Geri, someone who is thoughtful and kind with a soft heart is the type of student she would like to assist.

The Boerema family has a very special interest in gerontology and both of John's parents were patients at the Holland Home. She took time during her professional career to coordinate the development of nursing schools in underserved areas of Texas. She also was an active volunteer with the Red Cross Disaster Services into her mid-eighties. As she says, "I have always wanted the opportunity to help, particularly in areas of great need." Willard and Twylla VanderMolen Nieboer Family Scholarship

Twylla VanderMolen Nieboer ('62) and Willard Nieboer ('61) have established this scholarship in gratitude for the influence of Calvin College in their lives and in the lives of their three daughters who also graduated from Calvin and for Christian education in the lives of their grandchildren. Twylla worked in the Calvin College Alumni Office for 22 years, maintaining the alumni records of the college. Through this work came a deeper appreciation for the Calvin community established to shape the hearts and minds for Christian service. God has blessed them to be able to provide this scholarship, through which they hope to help future generations of students share in the Calvin experience, and through a Christ-centered education acquire skills for success as Christian servant-leaders.
