The littlest mastodon

by Robert T. Hatt

Abstract

The jaw of a baby mastodon, whose third and fourth premolars are in place, one showing just a trace of use and the other in position to erupt from the gum, recently has been added to the Cranbrook collections. Most interesting is the presence of a small incisor, a tusk 2 inches long with three cusps, which still has an enamel cap. This baby was found not far from the site of an adult find, on the fringe of Pontiac, Michigan.
