Won Lee, Professor

Professor Lee was born in Seoul, Korea. He graduated from Younsei University with his BA in 1985. He completed his M.Div at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1990. He then attended The Claremont Graduate School where he earned his Ph.D. in 1998. Prior to coming to Calvin he taught at the Southern Campus of San Francisco Theological Seminary from 1994-1996. Dr. Lee has been teaching in the Religion department at Calvin since the fall of 1996. He is actively involved in biblical scholarship by writing articles, presenting papers at conferences, organizing faculty teaching and scholarship seminars in Korea and has been an integral part of planning for and promoting Korean studies at Calvin by creating Korean Language course (starting 2009) and the Korean lectureship which brings Korea-focused speakers and performers in the arts to Calvin.
Academic Interests/Areas of Specialization
Professor Lee specializes in biblical exegesis, theology, and hermeneutics of the Old Testament. As a Korean-American, he is interested in bridging the gap between West and East in biblical scholarship that has led him to teach two January interim courses on Asian biblical interpretation at Calvin, a week-long intensive course on the Bible as a Western classic at the Capital Normal University in Beijing, and is a lecturer at many major universities and seminars in Korea. Since 2000, he organizes the biannual Calvin Seminar on Higher Education in Korea which involves 4-5 Calvin faculty and 125-150 faculty members from various Korean Universities.
Professor Lee is the author of two books, Punishment and Forgiveness in Israel’s Migratory Campaign: The Macrostructure of Numbers 10:11-36:13 (Grand Rapids, Eerdmans, 2003) and The Bible: A Library of Holy Writings (Seoul, Korea: Sallim, 2005) currently being translated in Chinese. He is also the author of over 10 articles and more than 40 book reviews.
When he is not teaching Professor Lee enjoys singing at his church, reading children’s novels and playing with his two boys.
