Seminars 2008 -Congregations and Religious Diversity in Contemporary America
Congregations and Religious Diversity in Contemporary America
R. Stephen Warner
June 23-July 18, 2008
Applicant Information
Who May Apply
The seminar is designed for a diverse mix of social science-oriented scholars (including advanced graduate students) from fields including but not limited to sociology, anthropology, religious studies, practical theology, ethnic studies, history, and folklore. Participants will be selected partly on the basis of a proposal in which they state the congregational studies project they plan to work on in the seminar and the current state of progress on the project. Applicable projects include ethnographic or historical congregational case studies or comparative studies (e.g., a comparison of different religious traditions serving the same ethnic group, or conversely a comparison of congregations within one religious tradition serving different ethnic groups). Some projects might be nearing completion, and others might be in the beginning stages. In cases of empirical research, the applicant should demonstrate his or her entrée with the subject communities. Other worthy projects would include a work of synthesis or theory in congregational studies or a syllabus for a proposed course to be added to the offerings of the applicant's PhD-granting department.
How to Apply
To apply, an applicant must submit the following:
1) the application form
2) a curriculum vitae or resume
3) a statement of purpose (1-2 pp.) explaining how the seminar complements the applicant's overall vocation (research, teaching, ministry, etc.)
4) brief proposal (1-2 pp.) outlining the kind of written product (book chapter, thesis chapter, book proposal, scholarly article, general interest essay, course syllabus) the applicant expects to work on in the context of the seminar.
Items 2) through 4) must be sent as separate Word document attachments to seminars@calvin.edu with "Congregations and Religious Diversity in Contemporary America" in the subject line, and the applicant's name in the body of the email.
