The Excel ACT Tutoring and Mentoring Program, coordinated by the offices of pre-college programs and the Service-Learning Center at Calvin College, is available to high school students from the following public school districts: Grand Rapids (Central, Creston, Grand Rapids Montessori, Ottawa Hills and Union), Wyoming, Godfrey-Lee, and Kentwood, as well as Potter's House Christian.
Up to 40 students in each semester (fall and spring) from the designated high schools will be able to participate in a five-week session in which Calvin students provide mentoring and tutoring assistance for the ACT. Students are also able to participate in additional academic enrichment and other activities offered by the college, such as Aspirando Alto and the MLK Young Leaders Weekend.
Tutoring for the spring 2013 session takes place on Calvin's campus over five weeks, from February 12 to March 14.
Students must be able to commit 1-2 days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays) for up to two hours each week between 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. on the designated days. There is also a mandatory orientation on Thursday, January 31.
There is no fee to apply. The refundable enrollment fee of $20.00 is due at the family orientation for those students who are admitted. The fee will be returned at the end of the five-week session with a minimum of 80% attendance.
Time is dedicated to covering specific subject matters included on the ACT: English, math, reading, science and writing. At the end of each five-week session, the pairs and triads (in addition to the pre-college students’ parents) will be honored through a celebration.
