For this course, you will explore English language dialects within a historical context. Students will travel to London, Ireland and Scotland to collect your own audio-recorded samples of British, Scottish, and Irish dialects.

The class will visit important linguistic historical sites in each region. Assignments include collecting and transcribing four samples from each region and then presenting your findings to the class for discussion. You also will write a final paper that contrasts the features of each dialect within the context of each region’s unique and share history. You may choose to fulfill your CCE requirement by completing extended interviews focusing on cultural similarities differences with persons from each region and then writing a longer final paper on your results compared to the readings on each region. No prerequisites are required.
