- Completed a BA in geography and planning at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
- Received his PhD in geography from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, 1978
- Taught at Wilfrid Laurier University for seven years

- Joined GEO department in 1982, as the first full time PhD geographer at Calvin, hired to develop both geography and environmental studies programs

- Hometown: The Netherlands
- Immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of thirteen
- Favorite landscapes and places come from his geographical roots and from the venues of his post-commencement geography field trips (with thanks to all the participants!): Amsterdam, Toronto, Britain's Yorkshire, rails-to-trails, and Prince Edward Island
