Signs and Wonders - Daniel Gerwin

From July 2-25, the Calvin College Department of Art and Art History presents an exhibition of artwork at the (106) South Division Gallery entitled "Signs and Wonders" by artist Daniel Gerwin.

He writes: "The title, Signs and Wonders, refers to the Old Testament description of God’s delivery of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt, specifically the ten plagues, the parting of the red sea, and other related miracles." Gerwin uses vast expanses of color, with absracted forms adrift on the canvas. The abstracted forms are fragments of medieval paintings that he explains are displaced "from their origins into a foreign soil of my own creation." He continues: "...I attempt to wake them from their slumber, destabilizing and thereby activating them. They are apparitions in a secular space."
