Using Graphic Novels in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Classrooms

Dr. Dave Klanderman, Professor of Mathematics Education, Calvin University

Dr. Sarah Klanderman, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Marian University

We offer an overview of graphic novels that will excite students to further explore the STEM disciplines, explain concepts in the context of image, text, and their interplay to promote deeper understanding, and enhance learning for these students by prompting them to dig deeper into one or more concepts in a STEM discipline. We will offer summary findings from classroom usage of graphic novels linked to physics and mathematics at the middle school, high school, and university levels. Notably, students enrolled at multiple Christian universities and preparing to teach mathematics at the middle and high school levels have found graphic novels to be one helpful resource that can activate student imagination and love for learning in the STEM disciplines. Come celebrate the launch of a related book that we wrote with two coauthors!
