Welcome to the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department

Opportunities are Endless!

As a student in the chemistry or biochemistry program, you will have an outstanding education because you will master many innovative concepts that are both mathematical and artful. The problem-solving and critical-thinking skills you develop will produce excellence in any calling. At Calvin you will have many opportunities to team with our professors on cutting-edge research projects!

Creating Classroom Chemistry

Professor Doug Vander Griend is all about creating chemistry in the classroom—in more ways than just the obvious one...he tries to create an atmosphere where people get to know each other—and him.

“We understand that this is not just our job, it’s the reason we’re here: to help students succeed!”

Prof. Doug Vander Griend
has a PhD in inorganic chemistry from Northwestern University. He has taught in Calvin’s chemistry department for 10 years.

Extensive Summer Research

This past summer, nearly 90 science students researched everything from the human eye to herring gulls. The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department alone involved 33 undergraduate students working alongside 10 faculty members for 10 weeks of full-time summer research. Students participated in a wide variety of projects including splicing variants from zebrafish, applying laser techniques to the study of several possible chemical systems and characterizing nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery to cancer cells in-vitro. The VIMEO below provides a great look into the research that took place this summer. Professor Kumar Sinniah and Biochemistry student Amanda Witte also talk about their research on targeted drug delivery in cancer therapy.

High School Research Internship

Known as Project SEED, it is a program intended to foster a love of research in students before they attend college, said chemistry professor and SEED administrator Mark Muyskens: “It gets a whole new group of students involved with research at Calvin. We hope the experience motivates these young people to consider a career in science.”

High School students are learning--precisely--how science research is done. Read full story »
