In the Gezon Auditorium

On April 19–21, 26–28

Overview

Shakespeare’s Illyria resonates with the images and sounds of a celebration in its last hour. All the festive elements of Shakespearean comedy are present: mistaken identity, a shipwreck, practical jokes, and songs. Yet, this comedy rings with a ‘silvery tone of sadness,’ perhaps alluding to Shakespeare’s cannon. While Twelfth Night sustains the celebration of triumphant love that characterizes the other mature comedies, it does so in a way that suggest the playwright was also reflecting on the pains of life.
Shakespeare’s characters struggle foremost with important questions about love and friendship. Lovesick Orsino wants what he cannot have, Olivia.

Both are in love with dreams, neither stop to ask what reality is there. Yet, through the laughter, singing, trickery and celebration each character is simply trying to find the one person to make him or herself whole. As Karl Barth said of Mozart ‘He heard the harmony of creation in which the shadow also belongs but in which the shadow is not darkness, deficiency, or defeat… thus the cheerfulness in this harmony is not without its limits. But the light shines al the more brightly because it breaks forth from the shadow…’ This is the light of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.
