Lauren Spoelstra Named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in Women’s Lacrosse

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin goalkeeper Lauren Spoelstra its Defensive Player of the Week in women’s lacrosse for games played through March 16. Spoelstra, a senior from Oakland, N.J. (Eastern Christian HS), made six saves on 14 shots on goal in leading Calvin to a 15-8 victory over Robert Morris, Ill. She also had two ground balls and caused one turnover. Spoelstra is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Calvin is currently 2-2 on the year and scheduled to return to action on March 22 when it travels to Georgetown College of Kentucky for a non-conference game. Calvin was scheduled to face Aquinas this evening but that match has been postponed because of weather. A makeup date has not yet been set.

Women’s Lacrosse Claims 15-8 Win Over Robert Morris College

The Calvin women’s lacrosse team hosted Robert Morris University of Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Davenport University, looking for the Knights second win of the season. A hot start on a cold day allowed Calvin to build an early five goal lead, and the Knights never looked back en route to a 15-8 victory. Calvin jumped out to a 5-0 advantage with 17:33 to go in the first half as a balanced attack, with four Knights scoring, set the tone of the game early. The Knights have a quick turnaround as they will play Aquinas on Monday night at Davenport University. Monday night’s contest is scheduled to be played under the lights, starting at 8 p.m.

Women’s Lacrosse Edged at Capital 11-8

BEXLEY, OH - Calvin fell behind early against the Capital University Crusaders and could never get over the hump as the Knights dropped an 11-8 decision Saturday afternoon. Calvin (1-2) fell behind 4-0 in the opening 13 minutes of the first half. Calvin freshman Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central HS) scored on a free position shot to make the score 4-1 but the host Crusaders (2-0) countered with back-to-back goals to grab a 6-1 lead. Senior Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored on a feed from freshman Audrey Grabowski (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS) shortly before the first half ended to bring the Knights to within 6-2. Cefaratti had another big game with four goals, one assist and five points for Calvin in a losing cause. Sophomore Carolyn Forbes (Farmington Hills/Marian HS) added two goals while Holwerda had a goal and an assist and junior Karissa Reed (Greenville/Greenville HS) one goal. Senior goalie Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) had six saves in defeat.Calvin picked up 26 ground balls to the 17 collected by Capital was able to score on 11 of its 26 shots while Calvin was just 8-for-26 shooting. Calvin is back in action next Wednesday when it travels to rival Hope for a non-conference game slated to start at 4 p.m.

Women’s Lacrosse Sets Records in Defeating Defiance 15-1

DEFIANCE, OH – Calvin evened its season record at 1-1 with a 15-1 victory over the host Yellow Jackets of Defiance College Friday afternoon. Calvin used cohesive play and strong ball control to gain the win. Calvin recorded 12 assists on the afternoon and was 8-of-9 on clearing attempts, allowing the Knights to control the run of play. Calvin led 10-1 at halftime and then scored five unanswered goals in the second half. The Knights were paced by a pair of freshmen in Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central HS) and Audrey Grabowski (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS). Ceferatti tallied four goals and two assists for a total of six points, establishing a new Calvin single-game record for points in a game. Grabowski was close behind with three goals, two assists and five points.

Calvin’s Karissa Reed Named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in Women’s Lacrosse

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Karissa Reed and Alma’s Stephanie Herman its Players of the Week in women’s lacrosse for games played through March 1. Reed, a junior from Greenville (Greenville HS), scored two goals, scooped up five ground balls and caused a turnover in the Knights’ 15-8 loss to Otterbein, Ohio. She is being honored as MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Calvin is back in action this Friday and Saturday, competing at weekend games in Ohio. Calvin will travel to Defiance College on Friday for a 3 p.m. game and will then journey to Capital University on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.

Calvin women’s lacrosse drops season opener at Otterbein 15-8

WESTERVILLE, OH – Calvin opened its 2014 campaign with a 15-8 loss at Otterbein University Saturday afternoon. The game marked the season opener for both teams. Otterbein jumped out to a 4-1 lead and led 7-3 at halftime. Calvin scored in the opening seconds of the second half on a goal by junior Karissa Reed (Greenville/Greenville HS) but Otterbein answered with four unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Carolyn Forbes (Farmington Hills/Marian HS), junior Lissa Busscher (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Reed has two goals apiece for Calvin in defeat. Also scoring goals were junior Mary Hoogstra (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central HS). Cefaratti, Forbes and senior Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were all credited with one assist on the afternoon. Otterbein outshot Calvin 31-18. Senior Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) had nine saves in goal for the Knights.Reed collected five ground balls for Calvin. Otterbein took advantage of its free-position chances, converting 6 of 13 while the Knights went 0 for 5. Calvin is back in action on next weekend when it travels to Defiance for a game on March 7 and then to Capital on March 8.

Women’s Lacrosse Set to Launch 2014 Season

The Calvin women’s lacrosse team is set to open its season on Saturday at Otterbein University. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. A year ago, Calvin completed its inaugural MIAA campaign, finishing 4-12 overall and tied for fourth in the MIAA with a 2-4 conference record. Calvin returns 12 letterwinners from last year’s team and welcomes in seven newcomers. Leading the list of returning players are captains Mary Hoogstra (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Karissa Reed (Greenville/Greenville HS) and Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). A year ago, Hoogstra was named to the All-MIAA second team as a defender. Holwerda is the top returning player on offense, having garnered 15 goals, five assists and 20 points in 2013. In the preseason MIAA coaches’ poll, Calvin was picked to finish fifth in the league standings. The MIAA will feature a nine-team league in women’s lacrosse for the first time this spring as Kalamazoo and Saint Mary’s now have varsity programs. Calvin’s opening MIAA game is slated for April 2 when the Knights host Hope at 4 p.m.

Calvin Picked to Finish Fifth in MIAA Preseason Women’s Lacrosse Poll

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Defending champion Adrian has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women’s lacrosse championship while Calvin has been picked to finish fifth. A year ago, Calvin finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings at 2-4 in conference play but missed the four-team MIAA Tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker rule. Calvin finished 4-12 overall. Calvin is scheduled to open its 2014 season on March 1 when it travels to Otterbein for a non-conference game. MIAA conference action across the league is slated to begin on April 2.  Calvin’s league opener will be against rival Hope at Calvin.

MIAA Commissioner David Neilson to Retire at Conclusion of 2013-14 Academic Year

ALBION, Mich. – David L. Neilson, the commissioner of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association since 2002, has announced he will retire from the position at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year. The announcement of Commissioner Neilson’s retirement came Tuesday from Dr. Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran, president of Kalamazoo College and vice chairwoman of the MIAA Presidents’ Council.  He is the eighth and third-longest serving commissioner in the MIAA’s 126-year history. Commissioner Neilson and his wife, Karen, live in Royal Oak. They have four children and five grandchildren. The MIAA is the nation’s oldest collegiate athletic conference, founded in 1888. The MIAA consists of nine private colleges from Michigan and northern Indiana. Member institutions are Adrian College, Albion College, Alma College, Calvin College, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, Olivet College, Saint Mary’s College and Trine University.

Calvin Scholar-Athletes Named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll

The 2012-13 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and a record 151 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2012-13 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, seven are from Calvin.The seven Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for a fourth straight year are seniors Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS), Eric Doornbos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Matt DeBoer (Hudsonville, MI/Covenant Christian HS), Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS), Kelsey Irwin (Fraser, MI, /Fraser HS), Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) and Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS).
