Worship Apprentices (WA)


Hannah Biggs

Hannah Biggs is a sophomore from Zionsville, Indiana studying International Development and music. She has been involved in music, theatre, and worship teams all her life and plans to continue to grow that passion wherever God leads her. Besides music, she loves painting, cooking, journaling, talking to strangers and climbing trees. She is excited for next year for many reasons, but a couple of them include: Being part of a loving community like Calvin’s. And getting to work with such an amazing team of individuals praising God!



Jana Dykhuis

Jana Dykhuis is a sophomore from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who is majoring in Music Education. She was a pianist and vocalist on various worship teams at her school and church the past few years and also enjoyed playing on chapel teams and singing in choirs during her first year of college. Music, specifically music in worship, is a passion that God has given her, and she is so thankful and excited for this opportunity to serve and grow as a Worship Apprentice. Besides music, Jana takes joy in the simple things in life, like baking (and eating!) warm brownies, crocheting, spending time with people, reading good books for fun, God’s creation, and knock-knock jokes!



Joel Gustafson

Joel Gustafson is a senior from Rockton, Illinois. He is majoring in Strategic Communications with minors in Music in Worship and Youth Ministry Leadership. He has been singing and playing music in church since he was about five years old, was part of a boys choir for eleven years, played bass guitar for high school and Calvin chapel services, and sang and played bass guitar and keyboards in a rock band for two years. After Calvin, he hopes to attend seminary and find a church where he can participate in leading worship and/or youth ministry. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, traveling to new places, listening/writing/recording music, and talking about life with friends.  He is incredibly thankful to have this incredible opportunity to lead the Calvin community in worship and is looking forward to how God will be moving.



Chan Gyu Jang

Chan Gyu Jang is a senior studying music and psychology. He was born and raised in South Korea, but had lived in Kunming, China, for seven years before coming to Calvin. In his middle and high school years, he served the worship team at his home church in many different ways. Each year here at Calvin, he plays the piano in one of the worship teams. Besides taking classes and practicing his instruments, he enjoys reading books (that are not listed on the syllabi), talking to friends (preferably no more than three at a time), and practicing his instruments (more). His last three years at Calvin has been a great blessing and learning experience, and he is therefore very grateful and excited for the opportunity to serve the community as a worship apprentice.



Trisha Maddy

Trisha Maddy is in her last year at Calvin, and will be graduating in December with a degree in Music in Worship. She loves studying, playing and listening to all types of music, but is especially passionate about music within the church.She has been playing the piano in worship services since middle school, and has enjoyed opportunities to participate in the music of worship for several occasions, including Calvin chapels, LOFT services, dorm worship gatherings and services at local churches. She is very thankful for this opportunity to serve at Calvin, and she is looking forward to learning and serving with the Calvin chapel teams.



Anika Slauer

Anika Slauer is a Sophomore majoring in Elementary Education with minors in Integrated Science and Mathematics. She is originally from Union City, California, but has lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan the majority of her life. Music has always been her passion, especially singing, piano, and violin. She has been on her church’s praise team since 7th grade and has helped plan her high school’s chapels. Outside of music Anika loves water skiing, tubing, spending a multitude of time with her family, running, good conversations, and a hot cup of tea with a good book. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to be stretched in the role of being a Worship Apprentice, as well as spiritually and relationally throughout her next year.



Phil Van Eck

Phil Van Eck is a Senior from Grand Rapids with an Interdisciplinary major called Media in Worship. He loves playing the drum set and other forms of percussion and has been playing since he was about thirteen. He has been playing in worship bands for school chapels and church services since middle school. He is very excited for this opportunity to take more of a leadership role in the worship setting, serve a worship team and the Calvin Community, and hopes it helps him develop the necessary skills to someday become a church worship leader. In addition to playing with a worship team, he also enjoys playing and listening to music, watching and making movies, and generally spending time with good friends.



Bill K.A. Warners

Bill K.A. Warners is a sophomore student from Jenison, Michigan who is majoring in religion. He was a member of his church worship team for four years. He has also been involved in St. Cecilia Youth Philharmonic as well as theatre. When he's not glued to the piano bench Bill enjoys reading, well-crafted jokes, and playing with his blues band: Uncle Charlie's Mortgage Lifter. In the future Bill hopes to pursue a career of being a pastor. Bill is looking forward to using his gifts and talents to serve Calvin's community. 


Samuel Yoon

Samuel Yoon is a Senior from Cambodia, Phnom Penh. majoring in Psychology and pre-seminary. He was a part of leading worship and contemporary music all throughout his teenage years. He played acoustic guitar for 10 years in church, high school chapel, and recently at Calvin College. He is planning to continue a music career in Korea after graduation to develop his skills in music and become a singer-songwriter.
