Background: This is a small collection of GDR Posters. A separate page has posters from the 30th anniversary of the GDR. The small pictures on this page are thumbnails. Clicking on them will bring you to larger versions.

I do not anticipate adding many further posters. Should you want more, the best collection in the U.S. is at the Wende Museum in Los Angeles. David Heather’s DDR Posters (2014) is a good place to go. An Internet search will provide numerous other sources.

GDR Posters: 1949-1989


Poster The poster for Stalin’s 70th birthday in 1949. The text translates as: “The leader and teacher of humanity in the fight for peace, democracy, and socialism.”
Stalin poster The poster for Stalin’s 73rd birthday in 1952. The text translates as: “Long live the standard bearer of peace. The best friend of the German people.”
FDJ poster This poster from 1952 urgers learning about the Soviet Union. The caption: “Studied during the second FDJ school year: the priceless experiences of Soviet people in building communism.” The FDJ was the “Free German Youth,” the GDR’s organization for the young.
V. SED Parteitag poster The V. Party Congress of the East German Communist Party (the SED) was held in 1958. The caption: “Socialism is winning.”
1958 May Day poster May Day 1958. The caption: “United socialists are defeating militarists.” A huge worker takes care of the enemies of socialism.
Poster A poster leading up to the 11th Party Congress in 1986. The text: “Prosperity. I am contributing to it.”
