Mathematics 160

Calvin College

Interim 2007

Mathematics 160 is a continuation of Mathematics 159.  Most of the course is devoted to a study of integrals.  The course will cover the remaining sections of Chapter 4, all of Chapter 5, and selected sections from Chapter 6.  It will end with a final exam that covers all of 159 and 160 combined.

A typical day.  The course meets from 8:30 until 5:00 every day during the interim.  The day will be broken up into distinct activities.  The follow schedule indicates what most days will be like.

            8:30 – 9:50                  Discussion and lecture

            10:00 – 10:20              Morning break

            10:30 – 11:45              Problem session

            11:50 – 12:00              Quiz

            12:00 – 2:00                Lunch break

            2:00 – 2:50                  Discussion and lecture

            3:00 – 3:20                  Afternoon break

3:30 – 5:00                  Problem session (led by Eric Pols)

Attendance.  Since the interim is short but intense, everyone is expected to attend every session every day.  If this is impossible for you, you must make prior arrangements.

Homework.  Homework is assigned each day.  You should be able to complete most of it during the scheduled problem sessions.  You will not be expected to turn in the homework each day, but you should keep all of it in a notebook that you can show to me.

Quizzes.  There will be a quiz each day.  The quiz will cover the topics included in the previous day¹s homework assignments.

Midterm exam.  There will be a midterm exam on Friday, January 12.  The midterm will cover §§4.6, 4.8, and 5.1 – 5.4.

Final exam.  The final exam will be given on Tuesday, January 23.  The exam will be a version of the departmental final exam for Mathematics 161; it will cover all of Mathematics 159 and Mathematics 160.

Grades.  Grades in the course will be determined as follows.

            Attendance                              10%

            Homework and quizzes           15%

            Midterm                                  25%

Final                                        50%
