Course Description

Mathematics 159 (fall semester) and Mathematics 160 (interim) together form one course that covers both "elementary" functions and the first semester of calculus. Topics covered in Mathematics 159 include functions and their graphs, trigonometric functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, limits, continuity, derivatives, and applications of derivatives. Topics covered in Mathematics 160 include integrals and applications of integrals. At the end of Mathematics 160 students take the same departmental final exam that is administered in Mathematics 161.

Homework

The course will usually meet Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of each week. Homework will be due each Monday and Thursday, but it will be collected the day after it is due so that there is ample opportunity to ask questions about it. You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with other members of the class, but the work you turn in must be your own.

Quizzes

There will be a quiz each Friday. It will consist of one or two problems selected from the homework assignments due that week. You will be expected to show all the work leading to a solution.

Grades

Course grades will be based on the three tests, homework, quizzes, and the final exam.

   Tests 45%  (15% each)
   Homework 15%
 Quizzes 10%
 Final Exam   30%

Study assistance is available in the evenings according to the following schedule:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., North Hall Room 251.
