Problem: Find the current i through the voltage source.

The 10 and 20 are in parallel.  The 30 and 40 are in parallel.  Note that the 10 and 30 are NOT in series because of the horizontal connection to the other resistors.  Thus Req as seen by the voltage source is Req = (10 || 20) + (30 || 40)
        = 200/30 + 1200/70
         = 6.67 + 17.14
         = 23.81 ohms

Now use Ohm's law to find 

i = V/R = 5V / 23.81 ohms
  = .210 amps = 210 mA

Note that with parallel resistors, the equivalent resistance is always smaller (or equal) to the smallest resistor, e.g., 6.67 is less than 10.
