Globe Applet

This applet produces the geodesic (red path) from Chicago to Rome, along with the straight line one (cyan) passing through the Earth. This geodesic is discussed in the first part of Section 4.6 in The Heart of Mathematics, by Berger and Starbird. The applet itself is one I found on the Internet. The Mathematica (Wolfram) website uses it, but I do not know who authored it. For a copy of the Mathematica notebook I used to produce the arrays in the applet call, click here.
