Suggestions for Reading the Text

• Read at times of the day when you are very alert.
• Keep paper and a writing utensil on hand to carry out activities that are being described to you by the authors. Learning is most successfully achieved when you actually live these experiences.
• Continually carry on a conversation with yourself about just what the objectives of the writers are and how the current examples, paragraphs, etc. you are reading fit in with their goals.
• Continually make attempts to anticipate what is to come. You will miss the surprises the authors have in store for you if you never think about what you should have expected.
• Pause frequently to summarize what you have read so far. You are the authority on which works best for you, committing these summaries to writing, or simply “talking with yourself” (an activity educated people do engage in) about what you have read.
