I 12-16 -- Treat these problems as constructions/scientific experiments. You should start by building (probably from paper) a 1-by-1-by-2 rectangular box. Then, to do the problems as I would suggest will require some tape, a ruler, some string, and 5 different color pens. To do 12, measure out on your box the locations of the two points (one positioned as shown on the front of the box, the other on the left side). Mark these points both with the same color. Tape one end of your string to one of the dots. Then, without allowing the box to crimp up, try different ways around the outside of the box to reach the other point until you are confident you have found the shortest path. Use your ruler to determine the length of that path. At this point you will be ready for number 13. Do this one using the same box and procedure, just use a different color pen to mark the two dots. In the end you should have five lengths as answers, one each, to 12-16.
