Instructions for the Final Integrative Essay
Our study of infinity has largely been based upon the work of two
mathematicians, Georg Cantor and Kurt Gödel. In this essay,
trace out as best you can the themes from Engaging God's World
and other class materials/discussions as they are reflected in the
work, in so far as we have studied it, of one or both of these men.
Identify the issues you wish to discuss, the relevant aspects of
the Christian faith, and the connection between the two.
You must submit two hard copies, typed, double-spaced and
stapled (separately), of your essay by Wednesday, January
24, 10 am. (No late nor electronic submissions will be accepted!)
My office is NH 281, and if you come when I am not there, give
your paper to our department secretary in NH 270.
If you wish to know more about
Gödel, pp. 164-171 in IATM makes for interesting reading. Here
are the Wikipedia links for
Cantor and
Gödel.
Your essay should be 900-1500 words in length. It will be graded
based on these criteria:
-
overall structure: Your essay should exhibit careful
planning of what you want to say, and good presentation
of your ideas.
-
clarity of argument: Your assertions should have a
logical flow to them, and be well-supported. References to
assigned readings need only include the first author's last
name and the page number, enclosed in brackets and embedded
in the text of your essay (example: [Plantinga, p. 111] or
[Colson, p. 14]). Include a proper bibliography for any
other sources you use that were not part of assigned reading.
-
knowledge: While you are not asked to suppress
your own opinions or theological leanings, you must demonstrate
that you are accurately informed about pertinent issues as they
have been presented in readings, lectures and class discussions.
-
miscellaneous: Use proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc.
