Michigan Project NExT Fellowships
Program Description
Project NExT
(New Experiences in Teaching) is a program, sponsored by
the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) with support from the
Exxon Educational Foundation for faculty in their first few years of
full-time teaching, who are interested in improving the learning and
teaching of undergraduate mathematics. The Michigan Section of the MAA
began Project NExT activities at the Michigan MAA Section Annual Meeting
held in May 2000, at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant.
This year's program will again be coordinated with the
Michigan MAA Section Annual Meeting, which will be held
May 10-11 at Lawrence Technological University.
Michigan Section Project NExT Fellows will participate in a session
specifically designed for them on
Thursday afternoon, May 9,
preceding the start of the Section Meeting on Friday morning.
There may also be a special session during the day on Friday.
The program for the Michigan NExT sessions will vary from year to year
and will address issues of particular importance to new faculty such as:
developing successful teaching and assessment strategies;
supervising undergraduate research;
planning new courses and selecting text books;
using appropriate technology in the classroom;
balancing teaching, research and service responsibilities;
starting and maintaining a teaching portfolio; achieving tenure; and
others.
The schedule details are still being worked out, but we are looking
forward to presentations by Janet Anderson, Matt Boelkins, and Rheta
Rubenstein (and possibly some others, stay tuned).
Eligibility
Each year, betwen 5 and 10 Michigan Fellows will be selected for two year
terms. Their fellowship will pay the conference registration for the
Section Meeting and entitle them to attend the special session on Thursday,
which includes dinner on Thursday evening.
Applicants must have the support of their department and should provide
a statement of support from a department chair or dean, guaranteeing
financial support for transportation, meals, and lodging at the Section
Meeting. Limited support for travel and lodging may be available for
applicants whose departments cannot support faculty travel.
To be eligible, faculty must be in their first four years of full time
teaching and have a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates.
Applications for new Michigan NExT Fellows are now being accepted.
National NExT Fellows are encouraged to apply.
Application Procedure
Applicants should send the
application form, a statement of teaching philosophy,
a current curriculum vitae, and a letter of support by
