Michigan Project NExT Fellowships

Program Description

Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a program, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) with support from the Exxon Educational Foundation for faculty in their first few years of full-time teaching, who are interested in improving the learning and teaching of undergraduate mathematics. The Michigan Section of the MAA is preparing to start Project NExT activities this year at the Michigan MAA Section Annual Meeting, May 5/6, 2000, at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant.

Faculty in their first four years of full time teaching at the college/university level are invited to apply to become Michigan Section Project NExT Fellows and participate in a session specifically designed for them on Thursday afternoon, May 4, preceding the start of the Section Meeting on Friday morning. The program for the session will address issues of particular importance to new faculty such as: developing successful teaching and assessment strategies, planning new courses and selecting text books, using appropriate technology in the classroom, balancing teaching, research and service responsibilities, starting and maintaining a teaching portfolio, achieving tenure, and others.

Between 10 and 15 Michigan Fellows will be selected for two year terms. Their fellowship will pay the conference registration for the Section Meeting and entitle them to attend the special session on Thursday, which includes dinner on Thursday evening. Applicants must have the support of their department and should provide a statement of support from a department chair or dean, guaranteeing financial support for transportation, meals, and lodging at the Section Meeting. Limited support for travel and lodging may be available for applicants whose departments cannot support faculty travel.

Eligibility

To be eligible, faculty must be in their first four years of full time teaching and have a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates. Applications for new Michigan NExT Fellows are now being accepted. National NExT Fellows are encouraged to apply.

Application Procedure

Applicants should send the application form, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a current curriculum vitae by March 15, 2000 to:
