Date: Mon, 01 May 2000 11:37:07 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Registration info. for Los Angeles (fwd) Dear brown dot Fellows, The April issue of Focus, which contains registration information for the Mathfest this summer in Los Angeles, is starting to arrive in people's mailboxes. This is therefore a good time for me to provide some details about the plans for the brown dots at our meeting there: 1) A full schedule of brown dot activities will be distributed electronically in June; hard copy will await you in Los Angeles. 2) You should arrive on TUESDAY, AUGUST 1. The first official event for the brown dots will be a social event that evening with the incoming Fellows (no color chosen yet), from 8 to 10 p.m. The location will be announced later. 3) You will spend half of Wednesday, August 2, at sessions which the brown dots are organizing for themselves. The other half of the day will be devoted to joint activities with the incoming Fellows. 4) Project NExT will provide brown dot Fellows with FREE tickets to the Mathfest Opening Banquet on Wednesday, August 2. In the appropriate section of the registration form, just check the box that says "I am a Project NExT 99/00 Fellow," but do NOT include payment for the ticket. (Sorry, consultants -- this offer is for brown dot Fellows only!) 5) During the Mathfest, there will be special four-hour "Project NExT courses" for Fellows, as there were in Providence. These will meet from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, August 3 and 4. Stay tuned for a message in a few weeks from Joe, asking you to indicate your preferences among these courses. They are provided to the Fellows at no charge. [Note: The Project NExT courses are DIFFERENT from the MAA Short Course and the MAA Minicourses. If you wish to participate in those, you should pay the regular fee.] 6) Except for the opening banquet and the Project NExT courses, you and your institution are responsible for all other expenses associated with your trip. If you received "financial aid" from Project NExT, we will give you a reimbursement form in Los Angeles. 7) The Wednesday sessions and the Project NExT courses will be on the UCLA campus, but you may stay wherever you wish. If you want to stay near the incoming Fellows, you should stay in Dykstra Hall. 8) You should plan to stay through the Mathfest, which ends at 6 p.m. on SATURDAY, AUGUST 5. The registration form offers you the opportunity to register also for the "Mathematical Challenges" conference on August 7-12 that is sponsored by AMS. Participation in that conference is optional, and information about it will be published in the May issue of the AMS Notices. More details about the brown dot program, including locations of events, will be distributed later. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you in Los Angeles in August. Chris
