# Survey 3 Says...

Here is the data from Math 143F, Spring 2000, on two questions from Survey 3.

## The Survey Set-Up

I prepared two versions of Survey 3, and on the second class day I systematically gave alternate students different versions. Without knowing that there were two versions, the students were told to fill in the survey without discussing the questions with others in the class. There were 32 students in class, 16 had each version of the survey.

## The Results

The results for each of the two versions are listed below.
```1a. What is your favorite color?
____ red	____ green	____ purple	____ other: __________
1b. What is your favorite color?
```
```			red 	green	purple	blue	yellow	orange	black
version a	 2	 3 	  4	 5	  1	  1	  0
version b	 1	 1	  1	 7	  1	  1	  4
```

```
2a. What is your favorite zoo animal?
All 16 listed something other than a lion, giraffe or elephant
2b. What is your favorite zoo animal?
__5_ lion	__1_ giraffe	__2_ elephant	__8_ other: __________
```

```
3a. How many hours of TV do you watch in a typical week?
__5_ under 2	__7_ 2-4 	__3_ 5-7 	__0_ 8-10	__1_ more
3b. How many hours of TV do you watch in a typical week?
__9_ 0-4	__3_ 5-10 	__4_ 10-15	__0_ 15-20	__0_ more
--------
The data from 3a can (almost) be converted to the 3b format.  If we assume
that the one student who checked more in version a actually watched
10-15 hours of TV (likely, given the other data), the result is
the following:
```
```                         0-4    5-10    10-15    15-20    more
version a         12      3         1        0       0
version b          9      3         4        0       0
```
```Notice how the responses to version a tend to be somewhat lower.
More dramatic results could perhaps be obtained using ranges that are a
little lower.  Very few of my students claim to wath more than 10 hours per
week.
