Dumisani Muvanuhla

Our guide through the prison was this former prisoner. He was a member of the ANC's MK, or military wing.  He was tried on treason, was convicted to 30 years of imprisonment, but only served 5.5 years because the prisoners were freed in 1991.

Dumisani was such a gentle man; it was hard for us to believe that he could ever have been seen as a threat.  He was funny, too. I asked if I could take this picture of him, and he said that of course I could, and it might make him famous.

One story he told us was that he had been tortured into giving information.  He resisted, and his ankles were tied together, and he was hung from the 10th floor of the John Vorster building.

What is so beautiful to see is the forgiveness and grace with which Dumisani spoke and acted. He said that he had some good wardens that treated him fairly, and that even today, he can sit with some of them and say, "Remember when..."
