The Calvin College Language Studies Lab is located in the Raybrook Blg. Suite 104 at Calvin College and is headed by Professor Karen Miller. Research in our lab is focused on understanding first language acquisition in young children. Specifically, our research looks at children's ability to acquire sociolinguistic variation, morphology (e.g. plural morphology, subject-verb agreement), and semantic knowledge.
We use a variety of experimental techniques to determine children's language use at different ages of development. These techniques are fun for children as they are in the form of language games and story telling. We find that parents and children enjoy participating in our studies and often return to participate in additional studies. Children who come to Calvin College and participate in one of our studies receive a Calvin College Language Studies Lab t-shirt and a small toy for their participation. We thank in advance all parents and children who participate. Our work would not be possible without you!
If you are interested in participating in one of our studies or for further information, please contact Karen Miller at klm26@calvin.edu. We look forward from hearing from you!
Our research is made possible through grants from the National Science Foundation, the Calvin College Social Research Center and Calvin College Research Fellowships.
