President Judith VanderWoude called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m. and asked that all those present introduce themselves.
The minutes from the 2003 Annual Meeting (ASHA in Chicago , IL ) were review. The following changes were moved Visconto - should be Visconti; Zeusbia, Bagli - should be Zenobia , Bagli. The minutes were unanimously approved as amended by verbal acclamation.
The CAPCSD 2005 meeting in Scottsdale , Arizona - will be on pedagogy . This is a great meeting and a great place to network.
Treasurer's report Judy VanderWoude reported for Donna Goudlett-Collins. There have been $357.75 in expenditures and $4023.97 of income.
President's report (Judy VanderWoude) - We have continued to grow and set undergraduate agendas. This a wonderful group to be involved with.
KASA standards - James Nass and Michael Flahive:
Graduate schools are dictating what we need to do.
If we don't do it, then the student has to do it. Therefore, we need to have a form to track KASA requirements that pertain to our programs. If anyone has a form, send them to Judy VanderWoude and she will send it out via email.
Mike Flahive - seize the opportunity - new requirements for accountability of when students gain knowledge and skills, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Suggested approaching CAPCSD with our agenda and trying to solidify our content. We may need to go to the graduate programs and talk to them about what would serve them best. If we want to create form to help to organize the students, then should the form be included in the application process? If so, this could help market our students to the graduate programs.
Questions to think about: How are undergraduate programs meeting the requirements? Can we work within our colleges/universities and the departments to create courses that meet the KASA requirements (e.g., the science courses that meet KASA)? Do we report number of credits or is it based on having a course?
Helpful Resources - Classroom Assessment Techniques (CAT) book - Judy has found this very helpful in the formative and summative assessment. Listserv - CAPCSD midcomdis. Mike Flahive gave out the address for this. To enroll, email him at flahive@sxu.edu .
Many programs discussed having exit tests, which require a 70 to pass. Some have remediation programs to help those who don't pass.
Summary: At the undergraduate level we have more freedom to shape our programs. We need to talk to the graduate programs to determine what would be helpful to for them, and remember that our students do excel when they go to the graduate level. In 2005, we are looking at outcomes measures - competency in knowledge and skills
Online masters programs - What do we say about them? Northern Arizona and Western Kentucky have programs, and possibly Eastern Carolina and Nova Southwestern. If it is an accredited program, then it is credible.
Thank you to Don Goldberg for serving as President and Past President! Also thank you to Donna Goodlett-Collins for serving two terms as Treasurer!
Nominations for Treasurer - Mary Steppling ( Columbia College ). Motion to dispensed with rules approved unanimous. Unanimously elected by acclamation.
Nominations for President - President-elect for one year, President for 2 years and Past-President for one year- Bertha Smith Clark (Middle Tennessee State University). Motion to dispensed with rules approved unanimous. Unanimously elected by acclamation.
Bylaws Motion to include Associate Membership and to change from CSD to human CSD - which would be the more appropriate term. Fee for membership would be the same for both levels. Motion to have an electronic vote prior to February 1, 2005 (moved by Jim Naas and seconded by Bertha. Smith Clark .
Hiring Additional Faculty Don Goldberg (The College of Wooster) is adding another tenure line into the department. He is worried that it might be hard to find a new PhD graduate who wants to come to a small undergraduate program. What are some creative ways to hire new faculty? List in Chronicle in Higher Education ; ASHA Leader and also Advance (but that is very expensive); also Council of Academic Programs has a link which is free; word of mouth works well also. Others report that response rates have been better recently. Could NAPP take a booth for employment - then share the cost among the programs that are looking for faculty members? Another idea is to look for faculty that are recently retired- who want to just teach.
Doctoral Student Shortage - What are we not doing to get our own students to get a PhD? Answers varied from it doesn't pay or they would rather work first and then go back. Also, it would be great if graduate programs create more masters to PhD programs. Ronald McNair scholarship is a wonderful program to train students to be doctoral level students (Bertha Smith Clark). Team with graduate programs within or outside state - to get students into Masters-PhD track. Joe Melcher discussed a Department of Education grant that pays for the students' senior year and they are accepted provisionally at the end other junior year. University of Cincinnati does this.
Non-profit status of NAPP Judy VanderWoude is looking into it. We need to have a tax ID number - Peter Feudo is also helping with this. Some programs will not pay the fees without a tax ID number. If that is the case for your program, Judy will run credit card charges through Calvin College .
NAPP website is almost finished. The address is www.NAPPCSD.org. It will be up in the next few weeks. What do we want to add? Some ideas are a member list, KASA forms, minutes, links to CAA and CAPCSD.
NAPP enhancement grant - Marjorie Goodban - proposal that is submitted is to enhance undergraduate education. This is for instructional purposes, and the College/University must match the money. The maximum is $500.00. Do we want to do this again? The committee members will be Jim Naas, Joe Melcher and Kathy Jakielski .
Announcements
Bertha Smith Clark reported that in Tennessee there is a law that is being proposed that would make 3 tiers for Speech-Language Pathologists in working in the schools: SLP-A, BA, SLP with masters.
How many programs are going to graduate program? A few are looking into it.
Off-campus teaching - Jim Naas will come to pre-professional campuses at cost - if you want a CE program that will bring in both students and off-campus people.
Meeting adjourned at 2:02 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Colleen F. Visconti, Ph.D., CCC-SLP
NAPP Secretary
