National Academy of Preprofessional Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders

As the only organization representing undergraduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology, NAPP provides a mechanism for professional advocacy, exchange of information and coordination of self-improvement. The activities of NAPP include:

  1. Advocating for the needs of preprofessional, undergraduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology.
  2. Presenting position statements on preprofessional preparation issues.
  3. Disseminating information on emerging issues for those concerned with undergraduate education.
  4. Serving as an advisory group to associations, agencies and legislative bodies.

History

The National Academy of Preprofessional Programs in communication sciences and disorders (NAPP) was organized at the 1983 ASHA Convention in Cincinnati , Ohio . Until the formation of NAPP, there was no organization devoted to undergraduate education that addressed specific issues of preprofessional, undergraduate education. Since its formation, representatives of member institutions have met at least once per year at the annual ASHA Convention.

NAPP Involvement

NAPP is widely recognized as the voice for undergraduate-only programs in speech pathology and audiology. NAPP is an ASHA Related Professional Organization and maintains official liaisons with the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD). We have members who serve on ASHA Committees and Boards to assure effective representation of undergraduate education in general and undergraduate-only programs in particular. We were involved in the development of the ASHA-approved Advisement on Undergraduate/Preprofessional Education.
