Born and raised in Embro, a small village in southwestern Ontario, I ventured to Emmaus Bible College (Dubuque, IA) in the Fall of 1989 for what would be, unbeknownst to me, 10 years of college!  After that, my freshman year, I married my elementary (!) school sweetheart, Deanna who joined me as we made our way back to Iowa.  We returned to Ontario a year later to have our first son, Grayson, and for me to complete my studies in philosophy and religion at the University of Waterloo and the affiliated Catholic college, St. Jerome's.  After graduating with my B.Sc., I moved on to the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto to work on an M.Phil. degree in Philosophical Theology under the direction of Jim Olthuis.   We lived in beautiful Stratford, Ontario during this time, and welcomed our second son, Coleson.  After those two formative and exciting years, the next step was a PhD at Villanova University under the direction of John D. Caputo, completed in May, 1999.  Living in Philadelphia for four years was very special to us.  We became very involved in Cornerstone Christian Fellowship (A/G) where Deanna was Director of Women's Ministries and I was Secretary of the Board of Deacons.  And while in Philadelphia, we added two more to the brood: Madison, our first and only girl (born back in Stratford), and Jackson, our little Yankee born in Philly.

In the summer of 1999 we made the exciting trip west to take up a position as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University.  We attended Del Aire Assembly of God in Hawthorne, CA where Deanna was once again Director of Women's Ministry, I was on the board of deacons and taught adult Sunday School. Together we were Co-Directors of Twenty Cent Ministries, the College & Career Ministry.

But the sunshine of southern California wasn't enough to keep us from the opportunity to come to Grand Rapids and take up a position as Professor of Philosophy here at Calvin College where I also teach in the Department of Congregational and Ministry Studies and serve as a Research Fellow of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. I also occasionally teach in the PhD program at Calvin Theological Seminary and have been a visting professor at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, and Regent College in Vancouver, BC.

We live in the Heritage Hill neighborhood of Grand Rapids, a wonderfully diverse, mixed-use older neighborhood in the core city. Our family now attends Neland Ave. Christian Reformed Church. We enjoy gardening, cooking, travel, and wine with friends. And at the end of the day, I'm happy to put Derrida and Foucault on the shelf at the office and curl up at home with a book of poems by Donald Hall or a novel by Thomas Wolfe.
