Edmund
Evans, Crane's publisher, came up with the idea of using yellow enameled
paper for the covers of toy books, a practice that became very popular for
the publication of inexpensive novels for adults as well. The toybooks,
like this Cinderella done in 1874, cost sixpence to purchase. Both Evans
and Crane believed that larger publishing runs would permit them to bring
more quality to children's books without necessitating an increase in price.
