I. Purpose:
Information Technology has the purpose of facilitating data gathering,
reporting and analysis.
II. Methodology:
The information technology is an integrative component in the environmental
assessment of the Wadi el-Far'a. There are three main sectors to discuss:
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Web Server and Web page.
GIS is an essential decision-aid tool. This multi-step process includes
the basemap and data design, spatial data, geographic information, attribute
data, and spatial analysis. First, the basemap and themes of data are
created. Second, the spatial data are entered. The data was collected
and retrieved in two forms: digital and non-digital (see chart, "Data
Type and Source", p. 3). The digital information is in tables and
geo-referenced maps, while the non-digital information is derived mainly
from the field. Standard methods were utilized to digitize the data.
In addition, the global positioning system and detailed field maps aided
in the placement of the spatial data. Third, the geographic information
is referenced into the GIS software. The software used is ESRI ArcView
3.2 and ArcGIS 8.1. The grid is a Palestinian Grid (1923) whose map
extent are the coordinates in kilometers: (175,193), (200,193), (175,163)
and (200,163).
Once the spatial information reside in the Geographic Information System
(GIS), attribute data are entered (See Attached Appendix on data layers
and sources). Finally, the data were synthesized to analyze in a spatial
context. The Water Stress, Ecological Sensitive Areas, Valuable Agricultural
Areas, and Land Description were created using multiple GIS layers (See
Geology and Land Use, respectively).
In addition to the GIS, the web is utilized as a portal for data sharing
and reporting
Knight Vision (server)
The Wadi el-Far'a project team utilized the internet to enhance and
facilitate communication between the various members of the team throughout
the United States and the West Bank. Knight Vision, under Calvin College,
allowed team members to share documents and files for the project online
as well as provided a medium for email contact between project members.
Wadi el-Far'a Webpage: http://www.calvin.edu/~dvrb
The Wadi el-Far'a webpage was constructed for public viewing. It includes:
Project Overview: Summary of the overall scope of the project as well
as Abstracts from each of the sectors involved in the study.
Project Staff: Information on staff members- their school affiliations,
resume, and a brief description of their role in the project
Photo Gallery: Photos from Summer 2001 and 2002 meetings as well as
of the study area
Maps: Selected maps for the project's various sectors
Updates: updates on publications, presentations, new developments, and
schedule of events
Links: links to pertinent sites relating to the study area, the organizations
involved, and issues on Palestine.
III. Results and Conclusion:
Information Technology was absolutely essential in communication and
cooperation among the various site members. The web server and GIS will
provide good media for future endeavors and the web site will update
the public on the progress and links for data sources.
