The Internet continues to turn entire industries on their heads - completely changing the rules of the game. It continues to level the playing field and create online-based exchanges -- matching suppliers with consumers. The music industry is a good example, where now, the iTunes Music Store has changed the music distribution/marketing game. How people consume entertainment is changing as well, due to the next topic.

Convergence -- telecommunications, computing, networking, entertainment and other industries continue to converge. Higher ed can benefit from this convergence. Just a handful of the interesting items here include:

Social networking is booming; users are creating and submitting their own content; and the Web continues to be the great leveler in terms of playing fields. See:

How people find/categorize information is changing. For example, tagging is now very popular:

Hot technologies:

  • Podcasting is booming
  • The usage of blogs and wikis continues to increase
  • Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds give you the information you want, when you want it, and in the manner you wish to receive it
  • Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is changing the game within the telecom industries
  • See:

The web is going more mobile:

How software is being used/distributed is changing, moving away from CD-based installations to web-enabled services and applications.

  • Google is leading the way here. Will Goolge's products eventually replace the need for owning Microsoft Office? Or will Microsoft change their software distribution models as well?
