Biology 251: Collection InformationFall 1996

Collection Requirements

Specimen Requirements: Four categorizes are required:

1. Adult representatives of the following six non-insectan taxa
Order AcariSubphylum Crustacea
Order AraneaeClass Chilopoda
Order OpilionesClass Diplopoda
2. Immature representatives of three (3) insect orders
3. Adult representatives of twelve (12) insect orders
4. Adult representatives of thirty-five (35) insect families

Arrangement: Specimens on pins should be arranged in longitudinal columns in the boxes, with all families of one order following the single label for that order. See the sample collection in the laboratory. No credit will be given to specimens that lack a correct date-locality label. Only those specimens which you wish to have graded for correct identification should be submitted; points will be deducted for incorrect identifications. You should submit more specimens than the minimum required in order to compensate for misidentifications. Specimens that you do not wish to have graded but that you are willing to donate to our teaching collection should follow your main collection, in a column headed "JUNK".

Trading of specimens: Trading insects between members of this class is permitted, but you are responsible for the accurary of identifications and label data on all specimens that you submit. The original collector should be indicated on the date-locality label of traded specimens.
