Ethnodoxology: Calling all peoples to worship in their heart language
The growing field of ethnodoxology overflows with similar stories of what happens when people are encouraged to worship God in their heart language.

For 20 years already, the Vagla people in Ghana had had the New Testament in their own language. They had pastors from their own tribe and worship music borrowed from other cultures. But few Vagla could read, and their churches grew very slowly.

In 1997, ethnomusicologist Paul Neeley co-led a workshop to help Vagla Christians develop their own Scripture songs. Soon, people were on their feet—improvising choruses, shaking gourd rattles, beating drums, and dancing in circles.

The growing field of ethnodoxology overflows with similar stories of what happens when people are encouraged to worship God in their heart language.

Worship and Indigenous Voices: Worship Renewal in a Navajo Context
Mark Charles lives with his family on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona in the United States.

Mark Charles lives with his family on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona in the United States. He is invested in a teaching and discipleship ministry both on and off the reservation, building partnerships with other Navajo Christians who together are asking, "What does it mean to be Navajo and be Christian?" These reflections explore his journey to renew worship by recontextualizing Christian practice in community.
