Indigenous Communities

Many indigenous communities first encountered Christian practices through European and North American missionaries and influences. With that history often came the message that indigenous culture is incompatible with Christian worship. Today, many indigenous voices are calling for their communities to reject the idea that God can only be worshiped in a European or American style, and to renew their worship by contextualizing Christian practice in their native cultures.
