The grade of the slope should be considered when designing worship environments. A gradual, almost imperceptible, slope toward the platform does help with sightlines, particularly in a large space. This would encourage greater participation by all members of the congregation. If the grade is too sloped it can limit how art forms, such as dance and drama, are incorporated into the liturgy. This can also reinforce a “theater-like” feel of a more passive, spectator congregation.
A significant concern should be for those with disabilities. People with wheelchairs, walkers, or crutches should have easy access to the entire worship space. The slope of the floor as well as access to the pulpit, choir, communion, and baptismal areas should be considered for those with mobility issues.
