Christian Year Services
The following worship services are organized by season of the Christian year. Additional services are organized by occasional services, sermon series, and weekday worship. (Note: These services do not necessarily follow a lectionary.)
Advent
four Sundays/weeks before Christmas, during which we
remember Israel's waiting for Christ's first coming and
anticipate his second coming
Christmas
the season from December 25 to January 5th during which
we celebrate Christ's birth and the mystery of the incarnation
Epiphany
January 6th (usually observed on nearest Sunday), to remember the revelation of Christ to the world; season that focuses on Christ's teaching/healing
Lent
40 days before Easter (excluding Sundays); begins with Ash Wednesday; a season of preparation and repentance anticipating Good Friday and Easter
Holy Week
the week preceding Easter Sunday (Palm/Passion Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday) dedicated to prayer and reflection on the suffering of Christ
Easter
Easter Vigil (Saturday) focuses on redemption in Scripture (often includes baptisms); Easter Sunday celebrates Christ's resurrection; season of fifty days
Ascension
occurs 40 days after Easter; marks Christ's rising to heaven, a source of comfort as Christ is interceding for us and we are guaranteed a bodily resurrection
Pentecost
a celebration of the giving of the Holy Spirit to all believers and its work in renewing all of creation, that occurs 50 days after Easter; longest season of the Christian Year, lasting until Advent
Christ the King
