The Songs of Advent

The season of Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. It is intended to be a season of waiting. In Advent we are to be aware of God's actions in the past and the present as they give us hope for his actions in the future. We hear the prophecies about the Messiah's coming; we recognize the arrival of the Messiah in the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem; and we eagerly await the final consummation in his second coming.

The Advent season always has a deliberate tension within it: Christ has come, yet not all things are accomplished. Worship during Advent should help worshipers sense the tension between the "he has come" and "not all is yet accomplished.” Many traditions use Advent candles to heighten our sense of anticipation.

Beginning this week we present a series of five services for the season of Advent. The general series title will be "The Songs of Advent." The services/sermons will be:

#1 The People with a Song Psalm 147:1-3, 12-14
#2 The Song of a Brother and a Sister Exodus 15:1-21
#3 The Two Songs of the Big Night Luke 2:8-10 (A Candlelight Service)
#4 The Song of Mary Luke 1:46-55 (Christmas Eve/Christmas)
#5 The Song of Simeon Luke 2:29-32 (Sunday after Christmas)
