Music as Soul Food: Searching for a Balanced Diet
Music is soul food. Spiritually speaking, we are what we sing. Most congregations really know only 200 songs or hymns (if you count Christmas carols). God's people need a balanced diet.
John Witvliet elaborates on this metaphor in his book, Worship Seeking Understanding, and in a related article in Reformed Worship magazine. In addition, these web resources are available:
-
Video clips of "Worship Music as Soul Food: Reconsidering Our Spiritual Diets," presentation to High School Worship Training conference, April 2005, by John Witvliet.
- Song Diet Evaluation Sheet: a chart that can be filled out to paint a picture of your congregation or worshiping community's musical diet.
