Isaac Watts wrote settings of each of the 150 Psalms. His significant innovation was to present a Christological interpretation of the text by specifically naming Jesus as the fulfillment of the Psalm text. For this reason, several hymnals now classify this as a hymn—and often look to include in addition to a setting of Psalm 72. Watts is also the author of “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” a setting of Psalm 90 that does not feature this Christological interpolation.
