Christian Worship as New Covenant Renewal
John D. Witvliet
Calvin Theological Seminary

Summary
In many world religions, the essential purpose of worship is to contemplate the divine. The beauty of the biblical basis for Christian worship—as shown in Joshua, the Psalms, and elsewhere—is that Christian worship is much more than divine contemplation, more than celebration, more than inspiration; it is covenant renewal. In worship, God speaks to us and calls us to respond, in a continual exchange of vows.
