Abstract
Surprisingly, popular religious songs before the Reformation were often composed by women. However, given the nature of the genre, discerning their voices is a daunting task. This lecture sketches the sources and problems posed by these songs and discusses ways in which they reveal insights into the lives of late-medieval women.

Department of Germanic, Slavic, and East Asian Studies at the University of
Calgary. A former professor of Dutch at Calvin College, Professor Joldersma served a 3-year term as President's Advisor on Women's Issues at
Calgary.
