The Evangelical Christian Church (GKI) was started by German missionaries. Later the mission was directed by the Utrecht Mission Society in The Netherlands. There remains a close connection between the Evangelical Christian Church (GKI) and the Dutch Reformed Church in The Netherlands. The Evangelical Christian Church on Putaley Island, located in Lake Sentani in Papua, is set on the ridge overlooking the lake. While the church has been under construction for twelve years for lack of funding, the congregation proudly utilizes the space every Sunday morning and throughout the week.
