Christian Worship (REL 237):
This course examines the relationship between theology and worship by
considering the biblical basis for worship, the history of Christian liturgy,
and contemporary worship. Examples of sermons, baptismal and Lord’s
Supper practices, hymnody, prayers, dance, art, and architecture from
both traditional and contemporary worship are studied. Instructor: John

History and Philosophy of Music in Worship
(MUSC 236):
An introductory course in historically/theologically informed participation
in worship music. The relationship between the character of texts and
music and the cultural/theological context for them are examined. Congregational
song, ranging from the Old Testament Psalms to contemporary praise and
worship songs, is the focus of the course. Course requirements include
reading, tests, quizzes, listening to recorded music, leading worship
in class, and church service attendance with written reports. No previous

Musical Leadership in Worship (MUSC 336):
Development of skills for planning and leading music in public worship
services and a
study of the theological and musical requirements for serving as pastoral
musician in a
worshiping community.

Piano Accompanying in Worship (MUSC 221):
Individual or class instruction in effective leadership of congregational
singing from the
piano. Also includes instruction in other kinds of accompanying that occurs
in worship and some study of appropriate solo repertory. Instructor:
Norma de Waal Malefyt.
Early Christian and Byzantine Arts (ART 232):
A historical study of the form and function of visual images in the Early
Christian and the Byzantine traditions. Special attention will be given
to the rise of the cult of saints, to the veneration and destruction of
religious icons, and to the relationship between sacred images and the
imperial court. Slide lectures and class discussions; a research paper

and the Work of Worship: On the Cutting Edge of Worship Reform,
Past and Present:![]()
This interim course for Calvin College students, led by Rev. Ron Rienstra
and Prof. Debra Rienstra, was offered in May/June of 2003. Students travelled
to England and Scotland (including the Iona Community) to explore worship
reform and revival movements of the past and present. View slideshow with
